Laurel Hill Picnic

A Sunday picnic at the Laurel Hill Cemetery with Adelaide Paul and Mary Jo Bole. It was rather gloomy out but the rain held of until we were just about to leave.

I highly recommend a trip to this historical cemetery. It is full of the most amazing grave markers that are inscribed with strangely beautiful but very antiquated text. Also some of the stones made of white marble are so eroded you can hardly make out the decoration. The once blooming flowers have become wilted and almost composted looking.

I really loved the mixture of styles in grave markers. There are very ornate carved marble roses next to very modern looking granite Columns. And this metal and wood cross in with the marble crosses.

I also was quite taken with this sad lion who has been melting for years atop of this block

here it is. the beginnings anyway

Tattoo Day

I am eating breakfast as instructed. Then it is of to get my first tattoo. I am so excited, it took me a really long time to figure out what I wanted to get (about 4 years) but once I knew, I just knew.
I am only getting a small portion of the design today, just enough to cover my shoulder. It will probably be done in 4 parts as I am covering my whole arm. Wait until you see the design. It is sort of the same as the plate my bagel rests on.

Glaze Day

So today was glaze day. This comprises of wet sanding all the work, drawing all the pattern, filling in the patterns with colored glaze and then dipping the work in clear glaze (and cleaning the bottoms)
It is a lot to do. I haven't actually dipped the work yet, just letting the colored glaze dry a bit. Later perhaps.

I also met with my friend Tim Lewis today to talk about the shelves I want to build for Art Star and other shows. Exciting stuff. I think they are going to be laminated grey and green. I will post pictures once they are done.

Love grass, love apple, love-in-a-mist, love-lies-bleeding

I wonder if perhaps a series of loving cups might not be next on the list.

Love-Lies-Bleeding

Perhaps the first post that makes my blog title make sense. I find this to be the most beautiful and somewhat disturbing name. I saw this plant in my friend and former professor MJ Boles Garden last year and she just gave me a packet of the seeds. I know I need to use "Love-Lies-Bleeding" as a title for something. I just do not know what yet.

Belden Brick

So I finally got the containers I made at Belden Brick Factory last year all planted up. These are made of Ohio red brick clay that is heavy with shale and other rocks. I brought some of my molds (usually used for porcelain) to the factory, pressed the red clay into them and then built up and out. It is a once fire process so the decoration was limited to under glaze and some of the oxides they use there for labeling.

These succulents barely made the move from Ohio to Philadelphia but I am hoping there new home will revive them a little.

Let The Fun Begin

Green ware tumblers and small bowls

So after all that mold making the fun really started, as you can see I completely trashed my studio but I made a lot of dishes. I am preparing for two craft shows next month. The first is the Art Star Craft Bazaar at the very end of this month and the second is In Liquid's Art for the CashPoor
Mold Mayhem
I was excited to get to use some of the paper stencils I cut last week. All this work is in the kiln now bisque firing. I am going to Columbus OH tomorrow to visit some good friends and see the MFA show at OSU. I will take pictures and fill you in when I get back.Green ware dishes with stenciled slip designs

Oh What a Crazy Week

So mold making went well, slow but well. I made about 15 new molds over the course of 3 days. There was a little trial and error at first due to some damp plaster and some mistakes on my part. But in the end it was all good.

I cast the insides of some plastic trays and then made molds of those casts for tiles and some small dishes.

I also made some molds for a new design project I am working on called Philly Soup Shop. I will update you on this very soon

Small Favors III

Small Favors III opened last night at The Clay Studio, It was the third time I had participated in the show but this was the first time I was in town to see the show. It really looks great. A long line of plexi cubes wraps around the gallery, each filled with a unique small work. My house mate Hope Rovelto made a porcelain desk and chair that is very cool.

Lauren Graham Used My Cup!

So the other week my neighbour called me and asked if I would rent some dishes to be included in a set on a movie filming in Philadelphia. Of course I said yes. So I rented thirty three dishes to the movie The Dream of the Romans which I believe just wrapped up filming. It was great as I got paid and got all the work back safe and sound after four days. So if you see this movie look for my work in the home scenes of Grahams character. Lets hope they made the cut.

Lauren Graham will play Elizabeth in The Dream of the Romans, an independent comedy/romance movie. Lauren Graham co-stars Jeff Daniels (Arlen) in the movie.
